The Popinjays – Bang Up To Date With The Popinjays
10 track CD album.
The Popinjays were formed by Wendy Robinson and Polly Hancock in London in 1987. Playing around the London indie clubs, such as The Timebox at the Bull & Gate, they secured a deal with Big Cat who released their first EP, Don’t Go Back, in August 1988. The EP earned them Single of the Week in Melody Maker and a John Peel session, broadcast on 21 September 1988.
In 1989 they recruited friend and bass player Dana Baldinger to the band and signed to One Little Indian Records. That December, the British music magazine, NME reported that The Popinjays, along with others such as Power of Dreams, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine and The Charlatans, were their pick as ‘Stars of Tomorrow’.
Bang Up To Date with The Popinjays, released in April 1990, features the single ‘Please Let Me Go’, which was also named Single of the Week in Melody Maker. The album was recorded at The Garden Studio in Shoreditch, London and engineered and produced by Brian Pugsley, who had also worked with The Shamen and the Sugarcubes.
