The New Mendicants – Australia 2013
6 track CD EP.
Having taken up residence in Toronto, Ontario, founder of Teenage Fanclub, Norman Blake, was re-introduced to local Joe Pernice, both having worked with Norwegian band I Was A King in 2012.
A rendezvous was swiftly arranged, and “within minutes of hanging out in my kitchen we were booking recording dates” says Joe. The pair made their live debut with low-key public performances in a Toronto tavern – shows marked by plenty of banter, open tunings and sublime pop smarts.
Joined by Mike Belisky of The Sadies on drums, the band crystalized as The New Mendicants. They recorded their Australia 2013 EP while on tour in the UK, featuring three new compositions, an unexpected and lovely INXS cover, and a revisit of Teenage Fanclub’s ‘I Don’t Want Control Of You’ and The Pernice Brothers’ ‘Amazing Glow’.
“Mike and I first met Norman in 2000 when The Pernice Brothers opened for Teenage Fanclub in London’s Astoria. It was on that fateful night that George W. Bush was “elected” for the first time. I do recall a slightly lit Norman Blake promising an outright drunk Joe Pernice that he’d—despite the infinitesimally close proximity of their ages—adopt him should W win the election. Well, it took 12 years, but Norman is a man of his word.” – Joe Pernice
