Rairbirds – Rairbirds 1
11 track CD album, originally released in 2007.
“This album is a triumph of organic, real instrumented dance music. With a line up including guitars, cello, Hammond organ, clarinet, drums, congos and brass, there is no limit to the smorgasbord of influences. The band has emerged from Rootjoose, a Cornish funk band (a virgin phrase to Rockfeedback) who never quite matched mainstream success with their well-received, popular live shows. Their live pedigree shows here on their debut album as Rairbirds…
‘Cast the 1st Stone’ segues into a tinkered-with Dylan’s ‘It’s Alright Ma’, with its gentle beat and reassuring reality check lyric, in a world drenched with fools gold and impossible promises, singer, Jamie Crowe, assures his mother he’s ‘only sighing’. Its acoustic hip-hop blends into a horn-driven techno jam with classy strings and an overwhelming sense of classical style. It is very much what Pet Shop Boys were looking to achieve with ‘Nightlife, incorporating strings naturally into electronic music, as opposed to simply fleshing out weak songwriting. As with much else here, it is also reminiscent of John Peel favourites, Dreadzone, and it’s likely he would have liked this highlight too.” – Rockfeedback
