Inspired by the likes of The Postal Service, Hood and The Sea & Cake, Mixtapes & Cellmates formed in Stockholm in 2006. The trio signed to Tangled Up! and recorded their eponymous debut album in David Sandström’s house in the northern outbacks, with production by Oskar Sandlund. It was released in 2007 and led to the group touring with big names such as Dinosaur Jr, Bloc Party and Justice. For their follow-up Rox (also on Tangled Up! in 2010), the band expanded to a five-piece and largely dispensed with electronica in favour of walls of guitars and lushly orchestrated melodies.
