Kathryn Williams – Little Black Numbers
11 track album on CD and single 12″ heavyweight black vinyl.
While her best-known work is characterised by rich and honest songwriting inspired by the greats, from Nick Drake to Joni Mitchell and beyond, Williams has continually been able to evolve as an artist because she’s always looked outside of such genre boundaries. “The things that influence you aren’t necessarily going to come out in obvious ways, unless you’re trying to copy,” she observes.
Little Black Numbers was the second studio album by Kathryn Williams, released by CAW Records in 2000 in the United Kingdom. It was the release that saw her nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and gain significant media exposure in the UK.
“Little Black Numbers is a set of melancholy, introspective songs – most begin ‘I’ or ‘You’ – backed by double bass, cello, percussion, the odd saxophone riff and shimmer of Hammond organ. Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks is an obvious touchstone, up there with Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Bob Dylan. Her lyrics are meaningful in a vague sort of way: The opening line is: ‘You said clichés come from the truth/ Of beauty everyone feels they can own.'” – The Guardian
