Kalli – While The City Sleeps
10 track CD album. The debut from Kalli.
After a successful release fronting critically acclaimed indie darlings Without Gravity, Icelandic ethereal, folk/pop singer-songwriter Kalli [aka Karl Henry] steps into the limelight with his solo debut While The City Sleeps.
Building on the intimate atmosphere created by his former band, While The City Sleeps offers soothing harmonies and swirling guitar/piano based melodies on tracks like ‘Back Down’, all led by Kalli’s acclaimed vocals. As simplistic as the music sounds, the lyrics present a rather complex storyline of love and longing. The album continues the tradition of beauty and pain finding a nesting ground in the heart of a young man.
In some ways, While The City Sleeps can be considered Kalli’s sophomore effort, as much of the acclaim for Tenderfoot, the 2005 release from Without Gravity, was focused on the standout vocals. Bay Area weekly Metro Newspapers noted, “an emphasis on soothing acoustic songs that bubble over with melodies…all highlighted by the ethereal voice of singer Kalli.”
Popmatters.com also commented, “The songs’ melodies (which, thanks to [Kalli]’s sleepy, sober voice, can insinuate the spirit of Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley) are both uplifting and disillusioned.”
