Manu Delago releases new single alongside stunning video
Manu Delago has released a brand new version of Circadian, titled the Transatlantic Version. Manu says of the new version:
“The ’Transatlantic Version’ is actually the original version of the track ‘Circadian’. But when I made the album ‘Circadian’, the track didn’t really fit the concept because of its electronic nature. So, for the album, I created an acoustic version with handpan, strings and wind instruments to go with the orchestral sound.
The ’Transatlantic Version’ of Circadian was already written and produced back in 2018. With that track, I wanted to challenge myself and write a piece in which I’m not only playing handpans, but also use my feet to play electronic beats and operate a keyboard with my right hand. The main riff is a continuous arpeggio with 24 notes per bar that cycles around different chords. Throughout the piece, I gradually add more live effects on the handpans and a synth bass that also builds up in intensity. In the middle-section, there are some rhythmic variations of the arpeggio but the pulse stays still, like a heartbeat. At the end, this version goes through a rhythmic shift and the bass drum gives it a mellow techno feeling.
It was co-produced and mixed by my long-term collaborator Matt Robertson who lives on the West Coast of Canada. The files were sent across the Atlantic Ocean many times. But also the first live performances of the track happened in North-America where I performed as the support act for Ólafur Arnalds. Now, two years later the track finally gets released.
Since my original challenge with the track was that I can perform it live and solo, I wanted to show that in the video. But rather than doing that in a live-on-stage-situation, we decided to shoot the video in a surreal landscape. ”
